- Jozankei is a hot springs resort town easily accessible from central Sapporo. Jozankei is situated in Shikotsu-Toya National Park, and you can enjoy a range of activities among the lush greenery.
- An early departure is recommended to fully enjoy your day in nature. Aim to arrive at Jozankei around 8:00a.m. (Jozankei is about a one-hour drive from Sapporo by taxi or rental car.)
- We recommend Stand Up Paddling (SUP) so you can enjoy beautiful views of the Jozankei valley. Reservations are required, and you can check out the details in the websites below. Make sure to bring all necessary clothing for SUP!

In Jozankei, you can enjoy truly breathtaking nature only an hour’s drive from central Sapporo. SUP on the Toyohira River (which runs through Jozankei Valley) is the perfect activity to experience the full breadth of the beautiful scenery. The river is shallow and gentle, making SUP a safe activity for beginners and children. As Jozankei is a hot springs area, you might happen upon a natural flowing hot spring on your river adventure.
Fruit Picking is a fun activity you can enjoy at Jozankei Farm. Different fruits are available depending on the season. There are cherries in July, plums in August/September and apples in October. There is also a beautiful orchard next door, perfect for a light stroll.

- Only a one-minute walk from JR Otaru Station, Otaru Triangle Market is a lively, well-known market dating back to the 1950s.
- There are 16 different shops in the market mainly selling seafood.
- It is approximately a 60-minute drive from Jozankei to Otaru.
- For those coming by car, there are two parking lots nearby – one in front of and one next to Otaru Station. They cost 200-250 yen per hour.

Have a seafood lunch at Otaru Triangle Market. Open for almost 70 years, the OTM is a great place to purchase fresh seafood and local products. There are a variety of different shops, where you can enjoy a wide selection of fresh sushi, seafood bowls and local crab.

Otaru is a popular port city which has flourished as a gateway to Hokkaido since the pioneer days. You can still see hundred-year-old stone and brick buildings and get lost in the nostalgic atmosphere. The best photo spot is the Asakusa Bridge at the southernmost part of the canal.

Lined with many traditional stores, Sakaimachi is filled with the charms of old Otaru. Glass studios, the Music Box Museum and local sweet shops attract visitors all year-round. Enjoy strolling around and shopping – you may even need to allocate extra time to get souvenirs! The street’s top attractions are the world’s largest steam clock (in front of the Music Box Museum) that whistles every 15 minutes, and Kitaichi Hall, a beautiful café lit by 167 oil lamps. After you have explored the street, drive to Otaru Tenguyama Ropeway.

TENGUU Terrace, overlooking the port city
At an elevation of 532.4 meters, Tenguyama Mountain is an iconic landmark of Otaru. While it has always attracted many visitors, the mountain has gained even more popularity after being used as a location for the popular TV drama ‘First Love’. Take the short 5-minute ropeway ride to the summit to enjoy sweeping views of Otaru, the port, and Ishikari Bay. Sit and relax at Tengu Terrace and savor the moment. There is also a summit overlook, a zip line, Shimarisu Park, and a shrine.
